Tulsa County, Oklahoma – Jerlon Morgan has spent over a decade behind bars for a crime he maintains he did not commit. Convicted in 2011 for a 2010 shooting at Cheyenne Park, Morgan’s case has drawn national attention due to serious concerns over the reliability of the testimony used to convict him.

Morgan’s conviction relied heavily on eyewitness Jarred Miller, a friend of the victim. Miller and a second eyewitness, Joseph Thomas, initially gave statements to police that did not implicate Morgan. Within 24 hours, both witnesses changed their stories, claiming Morgan made an “off-record” statement to another individual identified as the co-defendant. Thomas, who was present, never corroborated that claim.

In April 2021, Miller signed a sworn affidavit recanting his trial testimony, admitting he had falsely implicated Morgan and that the alleged statement never occurred. Morgan’s family is actively seeking the assistance of a pro bono attorney to help present this new evidence to the courts and pursue legal relief that has so far been denied.

The Morgan family and supporters launched a petition to raise awareness, stating:

“The truth of the matter is there was not just one crime committed back in May of 2010, there were two. The death of an innocent man, and the lies spun that resulted in the conviction of another innocent man, Jerlon Morgan.”

National Parole and Commutation Services (NPCS) is preparing a commutation application on Morgan’s behalf, focusing on his proven innocence, wrongful conviction, and ongoing rehabilitation while incarcerated.

Injustice Spotlight commented:

“Jerlon Morgan’s case underscores the urgent need for mechanisms like commutation when credible evidence of innocence exists but has not been fully heard by the courts. His story highlights both systemic flaws and the human toll of wrongful convictions.”

The Morgan family encourages the public to support their efforts by signing the petition: Sign Jerlon Morgan's petition for release. For direct inquiries or to provide additional information, contact the family at Morgancaseproject@gmail.com.
